Determination of the Difference Threshold for Centroid
| Five-component harmonic
signals at 440 Hz. were employed. |
|
| Three standards were constructed at 2.2, 3.0, and 3.8 centroid units: | |

|
| Comparison stimuli were constructed using 10 increments of .02 centroid above and 10 increments of .02 centroid below the standard; therefore the 2.2 centroid series had comparison stimuli that ranged in centroid from 2.0 to 2.4. | |
| Note that the sum of the amplitudes of all stimuli were the same. | |
| In addition, five replicates of the standard were included, therefore, 25 stimuli were in each series. | |
| All subjects received a
practice session which included maximally different as
well as identical stimuli to establish the range. |
|
| Stimuli were 1 sec in duration, presented diotically in pairs, standard followed by comparison with a 250 msec pause between pairs. | |
| Stimuli were presented at .405 volts RMS (ca. 75 dB SPL circumnaural headphone). |
