Opera UCLA presents a new 90-minute version of Händel's AMADIGI, directed by UCLA alumnus James Darrah. Darrah's collaborative focus through varied mediums has quickly led him to be recognized as “a gifted young American director" (Chicago Tribune), with an unconventional and varied body of work that "injects real drama" (New York Times) into new theater and opera productions, video and film installations, and events that become "once-in-a-lifetime experience[s]" (Opera News). Music direction will be by Stephen Stubbs, who won the Grammy Award as conductor for Best Opera Recording 2015, and spent a 30-year career in Europe. He returned to his native Seattle in 2006 as one of the world’s most respected lutenists, conductors, and baroque opera specialists and in 2014 was awarded the Mayor’s Arts Award for ‘Raising the Bar’ in Seattle. James and Stephen have collaborated on multiple projects for Opera UCLA. The room design will be by Refik Anadol, who works in the fields of site-specific public art with parametric data sculpture approach and live audio/visual performance with immersive installation approach. He is particularly interested in exploring the space among digital and physical entities by creating a hybrid relationship between architecture and media arts.
