Please join us for an in-depth online discussion of composer Lera Auerbach's Symphony No. 6, "Vessels of Light" (2022)  in advance of its Thursday, May 18 west coast premiere at UCLA's Royce Hall.

Inspired by the heroic actions of World War II Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara and dedicated to him “and all those who risk everything for others,” this groundbreaking symphony received its North American premiere at Carnegie Hall in April and features solo cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper, UCLA Chamber Singers and UCLA Philharmonia, conducted by Neal Stulberg.

Topics will include Sugihara’s actions in saving thousands of Jews, Cooper’s personal connection to the Sugihara story, Auerbach’s multi-layered creative vision for the work and its presentation, the Yiddish-language poetry woven throughout the composition, and the challenges of preparing the symphony for performance.  UCLA Professor of History Todd Presner and Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience director Mark Kligman round out the panel.
