Join us for an evening of music to celebrate Kenny Burrell’s 85th birthday and to benefit the UCLA Jazz Studies program. UCLA’s beloved Distinguished Professor and Director of Jazz Studies, Kenny is recognized world-wide as one of the most respected jazz artists and as an international ambassador for jazz and its promotion as an art form. The concert program features new original works by Burrell, and a new work by composer Lalo Schifrin that will be performed by Barbara Morrison, Tierney Sutton, the Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra Unlimited and the UCLA Philharmonia under the direction of conductor Neal Stulberg. It will include Burrell’s heartfelt tribute to Billie Holiday, the great American jazz musician and singer-songwriter. The evening closes with “Love Suite” for full orchestra, choir, and strings with Burrell on guitar.

THE KENNY BURRELL CHAIR IN JAZZ STUDIES
"Kenny plays such an important role, in helping to establish a new paradigm for music education and the future of jazz." - HERB ALPERT
In honor of UCLA jazz legend Kenny Burrell, all proceeds from the birthday concert will go toward establishing the Kenny Burrell Endowed Chair in Jazz Studies. UCLA is grateful to The Herb Alpert Foundation for making a lead gift of $500,000 toward this goal, which will provide resources for student and faculty programs and performances in jazz studies. Please join this important campaign to support the future of Jazz Studies at UCLA.
The money raised is part of the $4.2 billion UCLA Centennial Campaign, which is scheduled to conclude in December 2019 during UCLA's 100th anniversary year.
Kenny Burrell 85: Artist, Legend, Legacy is presented by the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music with Friends of Jazz at UCLA.
