David J. Kurs Keynote Address

“Deaf West Theatre’s Spring Awakening: How ASL Musicals are
Stretching the Boundaries of the Musical”

Thursday, April 13, Schoenberg Hall, Free

6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Disability Studies 10th Anniversary Reception (Schoenberg Hall Courtyard)

8:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Keynote Address: DJ Kurs, Deaf West Theatre (Schoenberg Hall)

David J. Kurs is the Artistic Director of Deaf West Theatre, the second in its 26-year history. His keynote address examines Deaf West’s 2014 production of Spring Awakening, which traveled from its beginnings in a small theater in Los Angeles to Broadway, eventually garnering three Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Musical. For this event, he has assembled a panel of people to discuss the development of Spring Awakening as a show for both hearing and deaf performers and audiences. Panelists include the ASL Master Linda Bove (of Sesame Street fame), the director Michael Arden, and two of the stars—to discuss the process of adaptation. The program includes music and performances, with a backup instrumental combo of school of music students.

This program is part of the "Disability as a Spectacle Conference" celebrating 10 years of Disability Studies at UCLA. Complete event information can be found here.

Co-sponsored by The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and the school's new Center for Musical Humanities.
