The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Student Opportunity Fund supports enrichment activities beyond the regular curriculum that require travel away from campus. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to participate.

1. Activities must involve travel for presentation, education, or research:

a. Presenting in a scholarly setting
b. Performing alone or with a chamber ensemble
c. Attending performance of one’s own compositions or other creative activity
d. Participating in masterclasses, festivals, camps, and/or summer programs
e. Participating in national or international competitions
f. Attending professional conferences
g. Conducting archival or field work

2. The following activities are not eligible for funding:

a. Attending performances as an audience member
b. Auditioning or interviewing for graduate school
c. Auditioning or interviewing for professional positions
d. Participating in a local competition

3. Grants may fund the following expenses:

a. Airfare and related costs
b. Ground transportation and related costs
c. Lodging
d. Meals
e. Tuition or conference registration fees

4. Students apply individually through the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music website. The associate deans for academic mentoring and opportunity review the application and seek confirmation from the faculty advisor indicated by the student on the application before approval. Students may be asked to provide additional information or edit the application if certain aspects are ineligible for funding.

5. Students must submit original receipts for reimbursement no later than 30 days after the activity is complete. Failure to submit receipts on time may jeopardize funding.

6. The funding cycle begins after commencement in June; summer activities are included in the following academic year. Students are not eligible for funding after graduation. For the 2016–17 grant year (June 12, 2016–June 17, 2017), the following funding limits apply:

a. Up to $400 for activities in North America
b. Up to $800 for activities on other continents
c. Up to $800 maximum for any individual student (subject to availability; students are not guaranteed funds)

6b. Doctoral (Ph.D. and D.M.A.) students must first take advantage of the Doctoral Student Travel Grant administered by the Graduate Division, which provides each doctoral student $1,000 in travel funds over the course of the degree. Once those funds have been exhausted, doctoral students may apply to the Student Opportunity Fund, and applications will be considered subject to funds available.

7. Group travel requests (for School ensembles) may be considered and funded in rare instances; the primary purpose of the Student Opportunity Fund is to support individual student activities. Faculty making a group request should contact the associate deans for academic mentoring and opportunity. Any funding allocated to a student through a School ensemble counts towards that student’s individual funding limit for the year. Students in chamber ensembles who wish to participate as a group in the same activity should apply separately.

8. Students must attend a brief orientation session in order to be eligible to apply for grants. Orientation sessions will be offered as part of new student orientation in the fall and at least once per year for returning students.

9. Proposals for travel-related enrichment projects outside the scope of these guidelines may be considered and funded in rare instances. Students may contact the associate deans for academic mentoring and opportunity.
